Trends: Unlikely Bed Fellows (design wise anyway)
July 22, 2013Selecting a wedding or event venue is a personal process and the first step in planning for your big day. This should be done with care and reflect the style of the soon to be married couple or honoree whenever possible. How you will endeavor to accent the existing the décor of the venue to make it your own is typically done with help from your florist or event designer.
When selecting a florist, consider one who is familiar with the space and always ask the venue if they have a preferred vendor list. Often you can find the perfect fit this way. Don’t be afraid to go off the beaten path, just do so with caution. Even if a vendor is not on the preferred list they may have had very positive experiences with the venue and you can certainly ask your perspective florist or event designer for references and their familiarity with the space you have selected for your big day.
Be sure to select people across the board that you are most comfortable with. You should walk away from your very first consult with a confidence in their ability to deliver the product and service you expect.
Be prepared! When you book your first consult with a florist and/or event designer remember this is an interview. Though typically done on your vendor’s home turf, you are conducting an interview of talented service providers. It is important to give your vendors a fighting chance, let them show their stuff and creativity by allowing them to build off the inspiration you provide. A color palette is a fabulous place to start. Bring swatches or examples of tone and textures you wish to use throughout. If you have a theme in mind, don’t forget to mention that near the start of the consult.
Additionally, it is often helpful if you are able to provide a short list of likes and dislikes, as this can go a long way in assuring your first visit is timely and you are able to gather as much information as possible.
Of course there will always be times when you or yours are unsure of where to begin and arrive to the very first consult with a completely blank slate. This is an opportunity for your vendor to shine and show their true colors, allow them to inspire you!
