June Brides…
Tuesday, June 28th, 2011June is a wonderful month at Narcissus where wedding flowers are in full bloom. With numerous weddings and events each weekend in June we have had the great pleasure to deliver throughout New Jersey. Fabulous expressions of color and style flooded the venues we have served this month from rich purple and green tones to palettes of every color found in a summer sunset. The rose, also the flower of the month in June, fittingly was featured in several of our weddings. A great time of year to incorporate this tried and true bloom available in an abundance of colors! This past weekend had its fair share of stunning combinations. The mixed centerpiece (high/lows) were all the rage and for good reason. The mixing of ones centerpieces throughout... more
May is for Flowers…
Tuesday, May 31st, 2011On our monthly radio spot, we highlight the “Flower of the Month” with Millennium Radio on local WOBM 92.7FM, this month the Lily of the Valley reigns supreme. Dating back hundreds of years, and by some accounts even further, the Lily of the Valley is one of the most popular wedding flowers carried by brides throughout Europe, more specifically in Great Britain. Recently, Princess Kate carried a delicate bouquet of Lily of the Valley in her late April wedding to Prince William. Here in the States, this beautifully simple bloom, a series of perfectly shaped bells, has been losing in popularity to the fuller, lush bouquets of peony, roses and hydrangea, which remain all the rage for more dramatic statements. May, a traditionally... more
The Daffodil and March Weddings
Friday, March 11th, 2011This month we honor the Daffodil as the Birth Flower. The flower of the month is the Daffodil, or Narcissus. In fact, the Narcissus is the only birth flower credited with two months, December as the paper white and March as the Daffodil or Jonquil. The Jonquil is derived from the Spanish word Jonquilo, meaning “rush” said to be so named for the rush of green spear shaped foliage and gold/yellow bloom of the flowering bulb pant, that seem to rush from the ground, sometimes growing several inches in one day. The Jonquil has a short bloom cycle of March-April. Though popular during this time, the low price of the flower on the open market has continued to keep this bloom of the mass production and year round auction block. Though... more
Valentine’s Day… A Brief History
Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to tell those in your life just how much you love them in a very special way, even if you say “I love you” everyday as we all should. A Brief History: Red roses and the gift of flowers on Valentines Day dates back to the 1300’s. Chaucer first mentioned the romanticized idea of the “love bird” in a poem he wrote for the King of England on his first wedding anniversary in 1382 in his “Parlement of Foules”. From the middle-ages to this very day we have regarded the 14th day of February as a day to send love letters, sweets and flowers even though the date of Chaucer’s “Seynt Volantynys Day” has no direct link to February 14th. To find any historical connection to the calendar... more
A Benefit for the Arts… and more
Saturday, January 22nd, 2011January is a great month to host impromptu parties. In a season of otherwise cold and gray days, these events with family, friends and/or co-workers and business associates lift the spirits of all who attend. Simple but bold décor is a fabulous addition to add a little flare to your next winter get-together. Firstly, employ a lot of candle light, a mix of votive and pillars are perfect to add warmth to any room with a beautiful soft yellow glow. For your blooms, go for large, lush and colorful whenever possible. -For a tasteful and rich look, try deep blue/purple hydrangea with green viburnium as an accent in low lush footed vases or tapered cubes. -For a tropical look, to banish every thought of the winter blues, go for oversize vases... more
A Winter Wedding and the Year Ahead…
Thursday, December 30th, 2010The winter months provide a wonderful opportunity to plan for your spring, summer and fall wedding. January is traditionally a very busy month in our industry for booking weddings, as the New Year brings new energy to resume wedding planning! While we begin to plan for all of our 2011 weddings we are glad to have the opportunity to create some beautifully elegant winter weddings along the way. A winter wedding, rich in candlelight, beaming crystals and snow kissed tree tops creates a wonderland ideal for lasting photographs and a romantic evening each of your guests will not soon forget. Style wise, in keeping with the season, more textures and fewer blooms is a popular request. White birch, snowed branches with clustered pine cones... more
Holiday Events!
Thursday, December 2nd, 2010Holiday weddings and events can include a wonderful combination of textures, seasonal blooms and aromas. There are so many creative ways to incorporate the flowers of the season, balancing the fine line between winter elegance and jolly old Saint Nick. Step one- Start with a base palate; rich wine tones and burgundy with accents of gold, or go with winter white, hunter and moss greens accenting with pewter and silver. (by sticking to one or the other throughout your décor you will create a cleaner and well put together look) Step two- Add texture! Mix the natural pines of the season. Large needle and short bristled combinations are great. When it comes to cones, go oversized and ornaments with metallic and textured finishes are a... more
Great Venues!
Thursday, October 28th, 2010We have the great pleasure of visiting so many wonderful venues in New Jersey….. Serving Mallard Island Yacht Club and Laurita Winery, two of our favorite and very different venues, in the same day is always a blast. Creating dramatic centerpieces, each with their own distinct styles makes for an even more fun day in flower land. The grandeur and style of Mallard Island is seldom replicated. As a shore venue the Yacht Club is perhaps only rivaled by its own sister property. We created stunningly brilliant centerpieces of rich jewel tones, busting with deep purple hydrangea, fuchsia garden roses, mimosa, green cymbidium orchids, curly willow and other seasonally gorgeous blooms. These striking displays sat atop large cylinder vases of... more

This past weekend, one of our New Jersey weddings, was in fact my brothers wedding at the beautiful Rockleigh Country Club. Every detail of the wedding was perfectly executed, and might I add, the flowers where stunning, much to the credit of my wonderful team at Narcissus, as I was busy fulfilling my Best Man duties. The Flowers in Review: Each bridesmaid carried a combination of orange Donna roses, green Cymbidium orchids, cranberry calla lilies, with berry and seeded eucalyptus accents. (An awesome complement... more
