How Long Will Valentine Roses Last?

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

How Long Should My Valentine Roses Last? Great question! Typically the average rose (no matter the time of year) will live 5-7 days in fresh water. Once a flower is cut, the life cycle of the bloom has come to an end. To prolong the life of a flower the bottom of the stem should be cut on a bias to increase the surface area for the water to enter the stem. The water used should be lukewarm. The Stems should receive a fresh cut each time the water is changed in the vessel. The maximum life of the rose will be achieved if the water is changed daily and the vessel is cleaned of any bacteria buildup. The use of a floral preserver or other life extending product will help by slowing the growth of bacteria and other harmful algae in the water,... more

January Flower of the Month - “The Carnation”

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Congratulations to all our New Year Babies…your birth flower is the time-honored Carnation! It’s probably no surprise that the month that heads-up our modern calendar is also the month that celebrates one of the oldest known to be cultivated and most beloved of all flowers. It is also the flower that has come to symbolize a “Mother’s love” and named the official flower of Mother’s Day by Anna Jarvis 1907.      Mostly native to the Mediterranean area, its exact range is unknown as it has been in cultivation for over 2,000 years! The carnation, whose formal name Dianthus, is Greek for “heavenly flower”, and for centuries was considered to be ‘heaven sent’ and worn by both men and women from earliest days to symbolize... more

December Flower of the Month…The Narcissus

Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

December -   “Narcissus Papyraceus”   Celebrated in song and story as the ‘most wonderful time of the year, December, for many people, conjurors fond memories, shiny lights, and tradition.  But in the middle of the ‘rush rush’ of the holiday season, the delicate Narcissus Papyraceus bursts forth to remind us to ‘slow-it-down’ and enjoy the simple beauty of life and of each tiny flower.  Commonly known as the Paperwhite, the Narcissus Papyraceus is the perfect compliment to off-set the sometimes overbearingly large-leafed Poinsettia or Amaryllis plants.  Decorating with the Narcissus is simplicity itself.  Moderate light is all that is needed to encourage the Narcissus to stand proudly on kitchen, coffee, dining, or occasional... more

The Chrysanthemum and Fall Décor…

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Highlighted on our most recent radio spot for the “Flower of the Month on WOBM” the Chrysanthemum is a popular bloom throughout the autumn with its rich yellow, rust and red tones and well known hardiness. The national flower of Japan and symbol of the Emperor the Chrysanthemum is often used in ceremonies in Asian nations and is one of four noble plants in the Chinese culture which include, Plum Blossoms, Orchids and Bamboo. While many use the featured flower of the month in centerpieces and other floral arrangements, the fall is a wonderful time of year to bring a bit of the outdoors in! Using the many great textures available like pumpkins, gourds, berries and leaves a beautiful table top garland is within everyone’s reach. Today,... more

Flower of the Month- The Marigold

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Thank you for another great flower of the month radio spot with our friends at WOBM this morning. The flower of the month, the Marigold, is an outdoor bloom not commonly used in retail florists. This however, this did begin a conversation on seasonal planting.   This is the best time of year (first two weeks in October) to plant all the bulbs you will enjoy this coming spring. With the ground still soft and steady frosty nights still a few weeks away, we encourage you to plant the “seeds” for a beautiful spring garden this weekend.   If you are planning a spring wedding, planting these bulbs now will make for beautiful home photos. If your wedding is in March-April, be sure to plant yellow and white daffodils. This effort now will be... more

A Little “Me Time”

Friday, August 19th, 2011

We at Narcissus had a wonderful summer. Filled with fabulous events and exciting weddings, it remains a great joy of ours to provide beautiful flowers, service and design to our customers on the Jersey Shore. Thank you for your continued business and support!   Late August is always a hustle. Preparing our work and personal lives for the end of the summer and the start of a new season can cause even the most even keeled of us to come a little un-done.   Whether it is a fresh floral bouquet from Narcissus, a quick trip to the spa, curling up with a good book, or a little retail therapy don’t loose sight of the importance of some “me time” in our lives.   Strictly floral speaking, it has been proven that fresh flowers in the home or... more

June is a wonderful month at Narcissus where wedding flowers are in full bloom. With numerous weddings and events each weekend in June we have had the great pleasure to deliver throughout New Jersey.   Fabulous expressions of color and style flooded the venues we have served this month from rich purple and green tones to palettes of every color found in a summer sunset.   The rose, also the flower of the month in June, fittingly was featured in several of our weddings. A great time of year to incorporate this tried and true bloom available in an abundance of colors!   This past weekend had its fair share of stunning combinations. The mixed centerpiece (high/lows) were all the rage and for good reason. The mixing of ones centerpieces throughout... more

May is for Flowers…

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

On our monthly radio spot, we highlight the “Flower of the Month” with Millennium Radio on local WOBM 92.7FM, this month the Lily of the Valley reigns supreme.   Dating back hundreds of years, and by some accounts even further, the Lily of the Valley is one of the most popular wedding flowers carried by brides throughout Europe, more specifically in Great Britain.   Recently, Princess Kate carried a delicate bouquet of Lily of the Valley in her late April wedding to Prince William. Here in the States, this beautifully simple bloom, a series of perfectly shaped bells, has been losing in popularity to the fuller, lush bouquets of peony, roses and hydrangea, which remain all the rage for more dramatic statements.   May, a traditionally... more

The Daffodil and March Weddings

Friday, March 11th, 2011

This month we honor the Daffodil as the Birth Flower.   The flower of the month is the Daffodil, or Narcissus. In fact, the Narcissus is the only birth flower credited with two months, December as the paper white and March as the Daffodil or Jonquil.   The Jonquil is derived from the Spanish word Jonquilo, meaning “rush” said to be so named for the rush of green spear shaped foliage and gold/yellow bloom of the flowering bulb pant, that seem to rush from the ground, sometimes growing several inches in one day.   The Jonquil has a short bloom cycle of March-April. Though popular during this time, the low price of the flower on the open market has continued to keep this bloom of the mass production and year round auction block.   Though... more
